The Miami Dolphins are looking high and low to fill in the giant hole created when Jalen Ramsey suffered a meniscus tear early in training camp.
The team acted quickly, signing former Giants, Saints, and Bengals CB Eli Apple to a one-year deal. The team also has second-round pick Cam Smith as a contender, who has continued to impress in the early stages of training camp.
As it turns out, they weren't done adding competition to the cornerback room. On Thursday, the Dolphins reportedly signed Mark Gilbert, who led the USFL in interceptions last season.
Gilbert is the cousin of Darrelle Revis, the long-time Jets cornerback who will be enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday. His uncle is also Sean Gilbert who earned Pro Bowl honors in 1993 with the Los Angeles Rams.
A 2021 undrafted free agent out of Duke, he was originally signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers, who placed him on the practice squad to start the 2021 season. The Lions signed him off their practice squad in Week 8 and added him to their active roster. The Steelers added him back to their practice squad during the 2022 season.
Gilbert signed with the Pittsburgh Maulers of the USFL in March 2023. He earned All-USFL honors, leading the league in interceptions (4).
Now, he'll look to take advantage of a golden opportunity in Miami, who would love to see Gilbert continue that successful professional bloodline this fall.
Dolphins’ young group of cornerbacks must step up quickly
Like in 2022, Miami must adapt quickly to another injury, this time to Jalen Ramsey
