The Indianapolis Colts game on Sunday will be the fourth since quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was placed on injured reserve because of the concussion he suffered against the Buffalo Bills in week 2. It means that the Miami Dolphins quarterback will be eligible to return from IR starting next week, and it seems like that’s the plan.
According to The Athletic’s NFL insider Dianna Russini, if Tua doesn’t have any setbacks over the next few days, he is expected to practice with the idea of returning against the Arizona Cardinals in week 8. This is what Russini reported:
“Many believe he shouldn’t play football again, but Tua Tagovailoa has decided, conclusively, to continue his playing career — and the Miami Dolphins are down with their quarterback’s program. The NFL said last week that it will defer to independent and team doctors and will not step in to prevent Tagovailoa from playing. Head coach Mike McDaniel, who has a close relationship with his quarterback, shared with his team that Tua’s practice window opens up Wednesday, and the quarterback is expected to practice. As long as there are no setbacks, the hope is for Tagovailoa to play in their Week 8 game against the Arizona Cardinals.”
Since losing Tagovailoa, the Dolphins have been 1-2 averaging just ten points per game. This season, the Dolphins are 32nd in EPA/play, 31st in success rate, and 31st in offensive DVOA.
“The process will go as – you have to allow days to progress for evaluation of where you're at and have a proper assessment. I feel good about him,” Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel said earlier this week. “The experts and family and everybody that's been involved has been very diligent. When the next step occurs, the next step occurs.”
This is the third concussion in Tua Tagovailoa’s career — the previous ones had occurred in 2022. Since it happened, the Dolphins signed Tyler Huntley off the Baltimore Ravens’ practice squad, and he has been the starter since week 4. Skylar Thompson started one game, against the Seattle Seahawks in week 3.
