It isn’t going to take much of an imagination to figure out what to expect from each of the new members of the Miami Dolphins‘ secondary. Amid the latest injury to the defensive backfield — one that saw cornerback Cornell Armstrong land on injured reserve this morning, Miami has added a replacement to the active roster and subsequently added another to the practice squad.

Both new transactions spent time with the Dolphins in training camp and the preseason, and therefore both have some tape from this team as members of the expanded offseason roster in August.

Dolphins add safety Jordan Colbert to the 53-man roster, sign Kendall Sheffield to the practice squad

The addition of Jordan Colbert to the active roster is an intriguing development given that Miami has now made room for him on their 53-man roster twice. Given the win-loss trend of this season, finding more opportunities to get young, dynamic defenders on the field to get a sampling of if they can actually play is probably a wise decision. Colbert is a heat-seeking missile as a hitter and offered the team some sub-package flexibility in the preseason, aligning as a second-level linebacker in some sub-package groups.

The preseason, of course, is a different ball game than playing for keeps. But Colbert seems to have the interest of this staff.

Who is Dolphins cornerback Kendall Sheffield?

  • 4th-round draft choice in the 2019 NFL Draft out of Ohio State
  • A former 5-star recruit out of high school who initially enrolled at Alabama
  • Played three seasons for the Atlanta Falcons to start his NFL career
  • Spent the 2025 offseason on the Dolphins 90-man roster

Sheffield, on the other hand, is neither young or dynamic at this point. But his is an experienced player who could potentially eat some snaps in the nickel — which is what the Dolphins desperately need after seeing Armstrong, who is their fourth option to fill the position, go to injured reserve. Sheffield feels more like a warm body to fill a void as the Dolphins’ secondary continues to absorb wave after wave of injury.

It’s possible we see star safety Minkah Fitzpatrick seize reps in that role. He’s well experienced playing all over the secondary and the Dolphins may need him to live lower to the line of scrimmage out of necessity.

It’s hard to imagine things getting much worse for the Dolphins on the defensive side of the ball. And with a good crop of wide receivers coming to town this weekend via the Los Angeles Chargers, Miami’s pivot will need to overachieve to give Miami a chance to win.
