Dolphins’ latest roster move offers subtle clues about preseason plans and how Miami may manage key talent in August
What to make of another quarterback?
The Miami Dolphins continue to shuffle the bottom of their 2025 offseason roster. The latest transaction is a bitter one for Miami, as the Dolphins have shifted cornerback Kader Kohou onto the injured reserve list. It’s a move that will officially end his season amid what has been reported to be a partially torn ACL — a devastating injury for a young corner who was supposed to be a potential breakout starter on the perimeter in 2025.
The transaction is also a move that opens up a roster spot for someone else — and there may be some interesting clues for the next chapter of the preseason with who Miami chose to sign.
Miami Dolphins bring back quarterback Brett Gabbert
Quarterback Brett Gabbert is back in the fray this summer. Gabbert, who is the younger brother of former top draft choice and NFL quarterback Blaine Gabbert, first signed with Miami this offseason on May 22nd. He was released on July 22nd with the Dolphins on the eve of training camp.
The presence of Gabbert as a fourth quarterback achieves two things for Miami, neither that is likely to impact the regular season. First and foremost, it allows Miami to further split the practice reps in what is going to be a high-volume stretch of competitive joint practices with both Detroit and Chicago. If Gabbert sticks through these trips, he’s useful from a load management perspective.
He’s also in position to help the Dolphins ensure they are appropriately mitigating risk throughout the preseason. In a world in which the Dolphins do not want to play Tua Tagovailoa for large portions of the exhibition contests, Gabbert’s presence allows everyone else to seize desired reps before ceding to Gabbert. Consistency late in those games at quarterback that can give more consistent evaluation across players competing for spots on the bottom of the roster.
It would be very safe to say that Gabbert’s addition is less about competition for the quarterback room’s 53-man roster spots and more about ensuring they get the best version of those who will make the cut once September rolls around.
