The Miami Dolphins have decided to add an impactful piece to the roster, and that's only possible because rules change after the trade deadline.
On Monday, the Seattle Seahawks had released off-ball linebacker Tyrel Dodson, a former starter for them. On Tuesday, the Dolphins claimed him off waivers.
Dodson has been in the NFL since 2019, so he is a vested veteran. Until the trade deadline, vested veterans don't go through the waiver process — they are immediately released and are free to sign with anyone. However, vested veterans are also subject to waivers after the deadline, and the Dolphins used that to their advantage in this case.
There could certainly be other teams interested in Tyrel Dodson, who's 26 years old and has plenty of experience, but the Dolphins had the 10th waiver priority his week — it's based on the inverse order of the standings.
Tyrel Dodson spent his first four NFL seasons on the Buffalo Bills. This year, he signed with the Seahawks and was a starter. However, the team wanted to give more snaps to their younger players.
Dodson played 603 defensive snaps for Seattle — 550 in the box, 28 on the defensive line, 17 in the slot, four as a deep safety, and four as a boundary cornerback, according to PFF. His versatility is a big plus for the Dolphins.
The off-ball linebacker has a 65.8 PFF grade this season, which includes a 73.3 coverage grade.
