Talk about the all-time plot twist.

The Miami Dolphins are finally trading disgruntled cornerback Jalen Ramsey. That's the good news for Miami. Ramsey, who has been reportedly on the outs with the Dolphins since the early portions of April, is now set to head to the Steel City and will play this season with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The twist? The compensation package also includes tight end Jonnu Smith. And it also includes a former Miami Dolphins player coming back. Miami will be welcoming home safety Minkah Fitzpatrick as a key part of the deal.

Dolphins trade Jonnu Smith, Jalen Ramsey to Pittsburgh for Minkah Fitzpatrick

The deal ties together several loose ends that have lingered into the summertime. Smith has been pressing the Dolphins for an adjusted contract after re-writing the franchise's single-season record book at the position in 2024. Ramsey has been hoping to find a new home after an unconfirmed falling out with Miami towards the end of last season and the start of the offseason program.

For Miami, getting their former 2018 first-round draft choice back as a part of the deal solves some of the money issues that have been lingering around the prospect of moving Ramsey.

Fitzpatrick, of course, infamously pulled the plug on his own tenure with the Dolphins back in 2019 by stiff-arming a "tank" season by Miami. He was traded to Pittsburgh for a first-round draft choice in the 2020 NFL Draft after playing just two games in his second season in Miami.

The addition of Fitzpatrick bolsters a safety room that was looking, a bit lean on proven commodities. The Dolphins were poised to feature Ifeatu Melifonwu and Ashtyn Davis as the presumed starters before putting Fitzpatrick back into the mix.

What this team does at tight end will be a fascinating subplot. There aren't a lot of attractive options out there in the way of free agency. And Miami's other pass catchers in the tight end room are blockers first and foremost.

There's lots of dust that will need to settle on this blockbuster deal. But Miami can at the very least breathe a collective sigh of relief that they found a way out of the Ramsey contract and bolstered the other room in the secondary in the process.

Mike McDaniel is as tired of the Jalen Ramsey saga as the rest of us, but it may give the 2025 Miami Dolphins something they desperately need

Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel is, typically, pretty free-flowing with his responses at the podium. McDaniel has joked in the past about his long-winded nature during media availabilities, which isn’t necessarily always the worst thing for the media in attendance. They’re usually given something to work with when it comes to responses to their […]
