Dolphins’ patience with one of their woefully underperforming draft picks finally runs out
The Dolphins’ 2023 second round pick is leaving town.
The Miami Dolphins spent a premium draft pick on former South Carolina cornerback Cam Smith, selecting him in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft with the 51st overall pick. Two and a half years later, it goes without saying that it was a poor decision by general manager Chris Grier.
That mistake was finally acknowledged by the Dolphins on Tuesday afternoon. The team announced it has waived Smith off the reserve/non-football illness list.

Smith’s time off the field is more notable than his time on it. His three seasons in Miami have been marked by constant physical issues that have kept him on the sideline. And it resulted in some pretty stark words from general manager Chris Grier and Mike McDaniel this offseason.
“Cam Smith needs to come through at the end of the day,” Grier said just days before the 2025 NFL Draft. “He’s got to stay healthy and be on the field. He has shown some flashes, but this is a very big year for him. He knows what’s expected, because can’t hold his hand and wait for him anymore.”
“This is the story that – we’re all awaiting his ability to stay on the field,” McDaniel said back in early August. “So every time that there’s a setback, we’re trying to assess, but you’re got to stay on the field to continue to develop. I like the stuff that he’s doing in his development when he’s on the field.”
Although he was on the reserve/non-football illness list, the collective patience of Grier and McDaniel apparently finally wore out. Smith finishes his tenure with the Dolphins having appeared in 21 games with 18 combined tackles and no interceptions, sacks, tackles for loss, or forced or recovered fumbles to his name.
