The Miami Dolphins agreed to part ways with wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. seven months after signing him to a one-year, $3 million contract. Despite the name recognition, it was hard to project much production from him, and it never clicked in Miami.
Odell has suffered with leg injuries throughout his career. Now at 32 years old, it's getting harder and harder for him to be an impactful NFL player. Beckham started the season on the physically unable to perform list because of a knee injury.
He was activated in October and played eight games, but had only nine catches for 55 yards with the team. Especially with players like Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle in the wide receiver room, it would always be hard for Beckham to have many targets, but his performance was even lower than anyone could have expected.
Last year, he returned from a torn ACL and played decent football for the Baltimore Ravens, with 35 receptions for 565 yards and three touchdowns. In 2021, he signed with the Los Angeles Rams during the season after being cut by the Cleveland Browns and was an instrumental part of the Rams Super Bowl run.
Financial implications
As a vested veteran, Odell Beckham Jr. had his base salary guaranteed since Week 1. Now, the trade deadline has passed, so Odell is subject to waivers.
The Dolphins will hope that someone claims him, absorbing his remaining salary of $201k for the rest of the season. If nobody does it, that amount will also be dead money for the Dolphins. Miami is already guaranteed to have $2.8 million in dead money, but $895k won't hit the cap until next season because the Dolphins used a void year to spread the cap hit.
Dolphins continue to show their tunnel vision in one area with addition of Odell Beckham, Jr.
Miami once again misses the point of what this team needs the most
