The Miami Dolphins fell to the Jacksonville Jaguars 31-18 on Saturday night at EverBank Stadium in Jacksonville.  The game was called early in the fourth quarter due to a scary injury to Dolphins WR Daewood Davis.  The rookie from Western Kentucky took a shot to the head while trying to pull in a pass and rolled to his face motionless.  A backboard was brought out while the team gathered on the field.  Mike McDaniel and Doug Pederson met with officials after the injury, and the game was called shortly thereafter.

The Dolphins' starting offense played for roughly a quarter before QB Tua Tagovailoa and WR Tyreek Hill gave way to the backups.  Skylar Thompson completed 15 of 24 attempts for 135 yards and 2 interceptions.  Salvon Ahmed led the Dolphins on the ground with 43 yards on 4 carries.  River Cracraft was Miami's leading receiver with 5 catches for 52 yards.

What I liked:

-First play from Tua to Hill for 32 yards.  Easy pitch and catch, and Hill showed his speed to get around the corner and up the sideline.

-The first Jaguars drive was stopped with a fumble recovery by Jevon Holland on the goal line.  Looks like Jerome Baker forced it two yards short of the end zone.  Huge play that saved a touchdown.

-Ahmed with a 41-yard run on the second drive to set up goal to go.  Second straight game with a 40+ yard run.  He has to be playing himself onto the roster.

-Jaelan Phillips beat rookie tackle Anton Harrison and forced Harrison to hold him to avoid a sack.  Nice move, good result for the Dolphins.

-Jaylen Twyman with his second sack of the preseason to force a field goal.  He should find himself on the practice squad, at least.

-Duke Riley had a nice open field tackle to run out the clock as the Jaguars were on the edge of field goal range to end the first half.

-Skylar Thompson and Cedric Wilson, Jr. had a nice 22-yard connection on a deep crossing route.

-Chris Brooks rushed for two touchdowns.  His first one from five yards out was particularly impressive, as he churned his legs and dragging defenders across the goal line.  He also had another impressive 13-yard run later where he pulled defenders with him.  His size, strength, and physicality are something not matched on this roster, and he should have a strong chance at a practice squad spot next week, at minimum.

-Randy Charlton had a 10-yard sack.

What I didn't like:

-Davis' injury.  Was scary to see.  Hoping the young man is okay.

-The snap from Connor Williams on the second play of the game that flew way over Tua's head.  25-yard loss and a drive killer.  Second straight week with snap issues.  That just can't happen.

-First team defense was a sieve.  The Jags moved the ball at will on the ground and through the air against Miami's starters.  A fumble saved one touchdown drive, but not the next one.  Yes, the absence of Christian Wilkins and Zach Sieler were huge ones, especially against the run, but the rest of the group left a whole lot to be desired.

-In Skylar Thompson's first series, he badly overthrew Cedric Wilson, Jr. and it was intercepted on third down.  Really ugly misfire and set up the Jaguars on a short field.

-In Thompson's next series, he threw the ball to Jags LB Yasir Abdullah, who dropped into coverage in front of Cracraft.  A terrible read and decision in what's been, quite frankly, a pretty lousy preseason for the second-year quarterback.

-RB D'Ernest Johnson trotted untouched right through the middle of the Miami defense and into the end zone for a 17-3 lead, as the Dolphins' front seven was just manhandled.  The reserves are continuing to raise concerns that Miami doesn't have the quality depth that Vic Fangio has been worrying about.

-C.J. Beathard hooked up with Tim Jones on a simple go route for a 74-yard touchdown on the second play of the second half.  Rookie Cam Smith was cooked, as Jones put a double move on him, forcing Smith to grab him (to no avail), which also drew an illegal contact flag.  An all-around disaster of a play for the rookie.

-Nathan Rourke found Seth Williams for a 43-yard gain over CB Ethan Bonner, which set up a JaMycal Hasty touchdown run on the next play for a 31-12 lead.  Way too many big plays given up all game.

-Minimal pass rush from the reserve defenders for the last 3 quarters.  Very little pressure, and all three Jacksonville quarterbacks had field days.
