Jeff Hafley and his Dolphins coaching staff are juggling two essential tasks simultaneously this spring

These are busy times for the Miami Dolphins. Jeff Hafley and his coaching staff finally got their hands on the players today, as the team opened the first team workouts of the offseason.

But the staff is also providing some valuable feedback for the front office, as general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan and the scouting staff is prepping for an essential NFL Draft effort at the end of the month. How are Hafley and his coaches contributing to the cause? And how are they balancing that focus on potential players with the foundation of the team that’s already here? Hafley shared some insight into that workload on Tuesday afternoon during a press conference with the South Florida media.

“The collaboration right now with the draft stuff has gone great. (General Manager Jon-Eric Sullivan) is in there with the scouts and they’re all working all day on the draft. What we do right now, to give you an honest answer, is we usually take the mornings and we’ve been doing scheme and football and then we’ll break for lunch. Then the afternoon I want everybody taking the list that Sully has given to the coaches of the guys he wants us to evaluate and we’ve been diving in on the draft to help as much as we can in that regard. So I think there’s great collaboration.”

The Miami Dolphins’ full vision for a team, as Hafley further explained on Tuesday, will only come to form when he sees what this team actually has to work with. The NFL Draft will be a piece of that puzzle — although contributions from rookie players is somewhat of an educated guess until you start playing for keeps. Hafley and his team will have their hands full on that front, but they’re also blessed. Because of the coaching staff change, the Dolphins are among the NFL teams to get a jump-start on their offseason program. That means these double-dip days will help to close the gap of preparation — even if Miami doesn’t know what roster they’re tailoring themselves to until the end of the month.
