When the Miami Dolphins waived wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. late last week, there was an expectation that a contender could claim him off waivers. It was a low salary, after all, around $200k for the rest of the season, and Odell's experience could eventually be helpful like it was for the Los Angeles Rams in 2021.

But Odell cleared waivers and is officially a free agent. The Dolphins will have to pay the remainder of his salary, which is not great, but at the same time it shows Miami made the correct decision.

While Beckham had a great start to his career for the New York Giants and was an important part of the Rams Super Bowl run three years ago, multiple injuries were just too much for him to overcome.

Now he’s 32, and it’s hard to project anything close to what he was five, six years ago.

“Conversations led us to determining that it was the best for both parties,” head coach Mike McDaniel explained. “Odell and I have been very communicative since he’s been here. He had a tough start in terms of having to rehab his way into the season and then just looking at it as simple as, all right, what’s the best for both him and the team moving forward? And we just thought it was a good time to go that direction. That was the motivation behind it. That’s all.”

The Dolphins signed Odell Beckham back in May. However, he handled a knee injury and started the regular season on the physically unable to perform list. Odell played nine games for Miami, with nine catches for 55 yards.

Late last week, the Dolphins had also waived quarterback Skylar Thompson, a former seventh-round pick. He cleared waivers as well, and now he’s available to sign with any team.

He could even return to the Dolphins on the practice squad, for example.
