The Miami Dolphins will have their 53-man roster completed by the 4:00 pm ET deadline on Tuesday. The team has been steadily trimming its roster down, with the first cuts announced on Monday. Once that is done, the team will fill out its 16 available practice squad spots. They can start signing payers after the waiver claim period ends at 12:00 pm ET on Wednesday, August 30. Once the team is set, the Dolphins can protect up to 4 players each week from getting poached, or signed by another team. If done, that team must play them within a 6-10 day time frame, or otherwise sign them to the active roster and pay them 3 weeks salary.
Squads are comprised of 16 players. Players with no accrued seasons or with an accrued season that saw them being active in less than nine games in said season are eligible for the squad. There is no limit to this type of player. Players with two or fewer accrued seasons are also eligible, as are those with three or more, the latter of whom are called veterans. Teams are allowed to carry up to four of the former and six of the latter.
That distinction in type matters in part because the pay scale for practice squad players varies depending on whether players meet that threshold of experience. For 2023, veterans can earn between $16,100 and 20,600 per week, which comes to between $289,800 and $370,800 for 18 weeks, which amount can be negotiated between the player and team within that range. Players that do not meet the accrued season requirement to be considered a veteran would earn $12,000 per week, which comes to $216,000 for a full 18-week season.
