The Miami Dolphins defeated the New York Jets 30-0 on Sunday afternoon at Hard Rock Stadium.
Tua Tagovailoa completed 21 of 24 passes for 224 yards and a touchdown. Raheem Mostert led Miami on the ground with 42 yards in 15 carries and two touchdowns. Jaylen Waddle was Miami's lead pass catcher with 8 catches for 142 yards and a touchdown.
Here's what I liked and didn't about the Dolphins' win…
What I liked
– I liked the plan on the first drive to get Waddle involved immediately. Got the ball on quick routes towards the sideline and got nice yardage after the catch. As a result, the Dolphins moved the ball well until the play that saw Austin Jackson commit a bad holding penalty and Waddle get hurt.
– The sack-fumble by Zach Wilson was the first massive play of the game. The entire front seemingly got pressure, and Bradley Chubb and Christian Wilkins finished Wilson off as he was trying to throw it away. Great multi-player effort on that turnover.
– Mostert took it in three plays later for his team-record 19th touchdown on the season. What a year for the veteran runner.
– Andrew Van Ginkel had a great individual effort in coverage on the Jets' next series. He stayed with Tyler Conklin deep down the sideline, got his hand in, and broke up the pass.
– Two plays later, Eli Apple stayed with Xavier Gipson tightly and broke up a crossing pattern to force a punt. Two great efforts in coverage to kill the drive.
– And on fourth down, the Dolphins read fake punt and blew it up at the line of scrimmage. Bone-headed call by Robert Saleh, which set up the Dolphins on a short field again. Miami would get a field goal out of it to push the lead to 10-0.
– Chubb sacked Wilson for a 10-yard loss to kill the next drive. Just tore through the left side of the Jets' line and was on Wilson before he knew what was happening.
– The touch on the throw to Waddle for a 60-yard touchdown. One on one pitch and catch, just like Tagovailoa and Tyreek Hill have done all year. Tagovailoa looked off the safety nicely as well, and just like that, the Dolphins took firm control at 17-0.
– Five first half sacks and several more pressures for Miami's defense. What a job this Dolphins front seven did. New York's offensive line was absolutely overmatched, and Wilson took a pounding as a result. Absolute domination.
– The "Tua stinks" crowd was awfully quiet today. Tagovailoa was surgical with his timing and accuracy without his top weapon against a very good defense. 15/17 for 168 yards and a touchdown in the first half. Yeah, he's still a pretty darned good football player.
– It's so handy having two legit #1 wide receivers on the roster. Waddle was a monster in the first half, with 6 catches for 118 yards and a touchdown in the first half. A luxury that very, very few teams can boast.
– The pressure forced an errant Trevor Siemian throw in the third quarter with the Jets driving, and it resulted in a can of corn for Brandon Jones to go up and grab at the goal line. The 40-yard return was icing on the cake. That one was especially painful for the Jets, as they had sustained their longest drive of the day – 42 yards – before failing again.
– Chubb notched one more big play for good measure midway through the fourth quarter. He beat the Jets' left tackle off the edge, slapped the ball out of Siemian's hand, and dropped right on it. Three sacks, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. Terrific game from #2.
– And hey, Jones collected hid second pick of the game on a horrible overthrow on the Jets' final drive. A near-literal gift to put the cherry on top of a dominant shutout performance by the Dolphins defense.
What I didn't
– Jackson was flagged for a hold that wiped out a 23-yard completion to Waddle on the first drive. Grabbed the Jets rusher under the neck from behind. As obvious as it gets. Just can't do that.
– And Waddle left the game on that play after holding his chest on the field. Fortunately, he was able to return and put on a show. Still, it's incredible how bad this team's injury luck has been this year. Astoundingly tough. Finally got a fortunate break after another scare.
– Robbie Chosen was called for the trendy new offensive offsides penalty that's being flagged more this year. He did what Kadarius Toney did last week. He halfheartedly looked over and lazily waved towards the ref before quickly looking away and THEN coming to his final stopped position. Not sure why players are doing this, but it's inexplicable. Just take the extra second and do it right.
– Jeff Wilson, Jr. was held on his route in the end zone on third and goal in the third quarter, which was crystal clear defensive pass interference. However, no flag was thrown, and the Dolphins had to settle for a field goal. A pretty bad miss right in front of the officials.
