The Miami Dolphins defeated the New York Giants 31-16 on Sunday at Hard Rock Stadium. Coupled with the Bills' 25-20 loss to the Jaguars in London, the Dolphins are back in first place in the AFC East at 4-1.
Tua Tagovailoa completed 21 of 29 attempts for 300 yards with 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. De'Von Achane led the Dolphins on the ground with 11 carries for 151 yards and a touchdown. Tyreek Hill paced all Miami pass catchers with 8 catches for 181 yards and a touchdown.
Here's what I saw that I liked, and what I didn't like…
What I liked:
– Achane going for 25 yards on his first touch of the game. Got it to him in motion with a head of steam. Great call.
– Mike McDaniel followed that up by getting the ball into the hands of Hill and then to Jaylen Waddle on a screen on the next play. Spreading it out and using that speed early. 50 yards on their first 3 plays.
– And then hitting Cedric Wilson, Jr. in motion on the next play for another big gain. I love using players in motion, and it's worked so well. Hard to defend that kind of speed, especially when it gets started before the play begins.
– The leaping grab by Waddle for the first touchdown. Wow, did he sky up there and snatch it out of the air. Credit to Tagovailoa for putting it above the defender, as Waddle had a defender close to him.
– Christian Wilkins, Emmanuel Ogbah, and Bradley Chubb met at Daniel Jones to kill what had been a steady second drive by the Giants. A much needed first sack of the game. Graham Gano pulled the ensuing 55-yard field goal attempt.
– Kader Kohou crushed Wan'Dale Robinson for a four-yard loss right after an Achane fumble. A great response to the turnover. The Giants ended up punting three players later.
– Achane quickly atoned for his fumble, taking a handoff, bursting off tackle to the left side, and beating the defense around the edge and up the sideline for a 76-yard touchdown. What can you say at this point? Achane should be at the top of all rookie of the year ballots.
– Zach Sieler with a big sack of Jones on third down as the Giants were driving late in the first half. New York had been moving down the field methodically but had to settle for three.
– Tagovailoa to Hill for 64 yards. Hill lined up inside, went in motion wide, took a quick pass, cut up and across the field, and sprinted to the red zone.
– The two-minute drive before the end of the first half. A sack by Kayvon Thibodeaux slowed it down in field goal range, but Miami still answered the pick six with points before the half.
– And on the third play of the second half, Tagovailoa found Hill on a go route for a 69-yard touchdown. Not a huge fan of the call of unsportsmanlike conduct on Hill, who was simply trying to give the ball to his mom in the stands.
– The open field tackle by Elijah Campbell on the ensuing kickoff. There was a lane there for the New York returner, but Campbell made a strong one on one tackle at the 25 to prevent a possible big return.
– The bully ball the Dolphins used on the final drive of the third quarter, which resulted in a Raheem Mostert 2-yard touchdown to push the lead to a comfy 31-13. The offensive line just bludgeoned the Giants' front, with 211 yards on only a ridiculous 17 carries (12.4 yards per carry) through three quarters.
– On the drive, the Dolphins joined the 2000 St. Louis Rams as the only teams in NFL history to reach 2500 total yards in their first 5 games of the season. Seems pretty good.
– Hill hit 22.01 mph today, per the FOX broadcast citing NextGen stats. That's the fastest in the NFL this season, just eclipsing Achane. Speed kills.
– Miami didn't punt until 12:50 left in the game. That's usually a pretty good sign your offense has worked well.
-Andrew Van Ginkel flew off the ball so fast on the next play that the Giants' left tackle fell down trying to recover and chase after him. Van Ginkel registered Miami's sixth sack of the game, which sent Daniel Jones to the sideline and out of the game with a neck injury.
– A great stop by Van Ginkel on Tyrod Taylor on fourth down with under 2 minutes to go. It looked like Taylor had picked up the first down, but Van Ginkel had dragged him down and his knee hit before he reached the marker. Another fabulous game from number 43 in place of Jaelan Phillips.
What I didn't:
– Achane fumble on the second drive. He blasted through the hole and had a nice game, but Xavier McKinney punched it out while making the tackle, and the Giants recovered. Can't cough it up that easily.
– Allowing the Giants to convert on third-and 12, third-and-10, and third-and-9 in the first half. Can't let that happen.
– Offside penalty on Van Ginkel on a third-and-seven stop. The Giants converted two plays later. A missed chance to get off the field.
– Tagovailoa throwing a 102-yard pick six. Jason Pinnock took a deflected pass from the end zone and sprinted the entire field to change the game in an instant. Tagovailoa threw it towards Waddle, but two defenders were in front of Waddle, one of whom deflected the ball up for Pinnock. An absolutely terrible throw that should never have been made.
– The fan who got in the way of Hill trying to give the ball to his mom after his touchdown. It looked like the fan finally gave it over to her, but not until a mob gave him severe grief.
– A Connor Williams holding penalty took away a 39-yard run by Mostert. A legitimate and unnecessary infraction by the Dolphins' center, as Mostert had a head of steam by that point.
– A few plays later, Tagovailoa lobbed a short crossing route high over Waddle's head, which was intercepted. It's tough to tell from the replay if Tagovailoa's arm hit Williams' helmet as he backed into him, as his follow through appeared shortened. Fortunately, Miami's defense held the Giants to a field goal.
– Not running on third-and-a-foot with a little over 7 minutes left. Tagovailoa threw short to Waddle, who was tackled for a short loss and Miami had to punt it back. Have to run there.
– An illegal contact call on Xavien Howard wiped out a Van Ginkel sack on fourth down with 3 minutes left. That would have ended it, but the infraction kept the game going.
