The Miami Dolphins appear to have one area of their roster settled for the coming two seasons.
According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, the Dolphins and punter/holder Jake Bailey reached an agreement on Friday to a two-year contract extension.
Bailey spent his first four seasons in New England from 2019-22. He earned first-team All-Pro honors in 2020 with an impressive 48.7 punting average with a net punting mark of 45.6. That declined steadily over the next two years, with averages of 42.1 and 35.1 in 2022.
He signed a one-year contract with the Dolphins back in March 2023 and earned the job with almost no competition in training camp.
While the Dolphins' special teams units drew some criticism last year, Bailey's performance was a decent step forward, at least statistically, from his last year in New England. He was able to post gross and net punting averages of 45.7 and 40.7, respectively, the latter of which was his best mark since 2020.
But it was his control inside the red zone that was particularly noteworthy last year. In 53 punts, he landed 20 of them inside the 20 with only 3 touchbacks. His 5.3% touchback rate was the lowest of his career.
Miami got a decent performance more closely with what Bailey was able to do in 2021. Now they hope they can get a repeat performance of an outstanding 2020 next fall.
