The Miami Dolphins received some perfect bulletin board material on Thursday ahead of a huge showdown with the Buffalo Bills on Sunday night.
Miami and Buffalo will meet on Sunday night in what amounts to a de facto AFC East division championship game.
If the Dolphins beat the Bills in Miami on Sunday night, they'll win the division and secure the No. 2 seed in the AFC.
If the Dolphins lose, they'll fall to the No. 6 seed in the playoffs, which means they'll have to face the Kansas City Chiefs on the road in the first round.
That should be plenty of motivation for a Miami team that's coming off a blowout loss against the Baltimore Ravens.
But if they need some bulletin board material to ensure that they're motivated for 60 minutes against the Bills, then they're in luck.
Former NFL quarterback Ryan Leaf appeared on NFL Network's "Good Morning Football" on Thursday and handed the Dolphins some instant bulletin board material.
"I think Buffalo's just the better team right now," said Leaf. "Miami, I don't have any faith in them. It is a slight, I guess. You can take it as a slight, but it's not when it's true. I think that's the best way to put it. If it's true, it's not a slight at all. Buffalo, for me, is the team that goes to the No. 2 overall seed…I like Buffalo against Miami in this matchup simply because of the run they're on."
I can understand why folks are a bit down on the Dolphins after the horrible loss to the Ravens. That loss, combined with the fact that Miami is pretty banged up right now, doesn't inspire a lot of confidence that the Dolphins will get a win on Sunday night.
But one thing that Leaf seems to be forgetting is that Miami hasn't lost back-to-back games yet this season. Every time they've had a tough loss, they've responded with a big win.
Obviously we don't know what's going to happen on Sunday night. But expecting this team to just roll over and go down easy isn't wise. The Dolphins have shown all season that they're capable of responding in a big way after a tough loss. And there's no reason to expect that to change on Sunday night against Buffalo.
