The Miami Dolphins have much to consider this offseason. Whether it's the health of their QB Tua Tagovailoa, or providing new Defensive Coordinator Vic Fangio with enough difference makers on the market.
The first step is free agency, a highly-contested time where players are looking to earn a new or bigger deal. Including players seeking their first extension.
Which unfortunately looks like won't happen in Miami with one of the Dolphins most coveted unsrestricted free agents.
First reported by Miami Dolphins beat reporter Daniel Oyefusi, the team is preparing themselves for TE Mike Gesicki to leave in free agency.
Gesicki played the entire 2022 season under the franchise tag. Resulting in a season catching 32 passes for 362 yards and five touchdowns. His worst statistical season as a receiver since his rookie year.
As a receiver, Gesicki is one of the best in the league with the ball in his hand.
The issues arrive with Head Coach Mike McDaniel, who's offense is predicated on tight ends being able to run block as well as factor into the receiving game. An area that not only does Geski not excel in, but was passed over by Durham Smythe.
Smythe played 80 more snaps than Gesicki and while isn't the same play-maker, is very much a more complete tight end. The type that better fits McDaniel's offense.
Gesicki's current contract evaluation is between $8-10 million per year, according to Spotrac. A contract that is too expensive on a team that will only use him as TE2.
