The Miami Dolphins suffered a shocking collapse on Monday night football, losing 28-27 despite holding a 14-point lead with under 3 minutes remaining in the contest.
It was a loss of such a shocking nature that one of its kind had only been seen once since 2016. According to NextGen Stats via NFL Network Reporter Cameron Wolfe, the Titans' win probability was down to 0.4% with just over 3 minutes left in the game, the second lowest odds where a team came back and won since 2016.
One might wonder how this kind of thing could happen. I'm sure many Dolphins fans walking out of the stadium and clicking off their televisions last night had that exact same thought going through their heads.
Well, Dolphins OLB Bradley Chubb gave the Dolphins fans some direct information, and it's not what any fan would want to hear. According to Chubb, they simply took their foot off the gas.
As disappointing as that is to hear, it's even more bothersome to hear a player say that when a goal is in front of them as it relates to the playoffs, their natural instinct is to go into cruise control. That's the opposite of a what you would expect a competitor to say.
If anything, when an opportunity is there, a winner will go out and try to seize it. And even those who don't end up winning will still go all out while taking a shot at it. Maximum effort and fighting for goals is what drives competitive sports. The opposite is believing you can coast to a goal that's in front of you.
Chubb's comments are hopefully either a misspoken or poorly expressed sentiment or otherwise are simply limited to Chubb himself. That kind of mentality throughout a locker room is one that will keep a team from achieving its goals.
The opportunity was there to take over the top spot in the AFC. Now, they're going to have to fight tooth and nail with less margin for error to end up there. A New York Jets team fighting for revenge from its 34-13 loss to the Dolphins awaits, followed by three daunting challenges in Dallas, Baltimore, and Buffalo.
If Miami doesn't shut off the cruise control, then the objects in the rearview mirror will be much closer than they appear very soon.
