The Miami Dolphins could be getting a jump on improving their roster with a significant outside addition.
Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Dolphins met with free agent tight end Jonnu Smith on Tuesday and are reportedly negotiating terms of a contract.
While free agency does not formally begin until March 13, Smith is an exception to that rule. He was released by the Atlanta Falcons on February 27. Because he was released in the offseason, Smith is allowed to sign with any team immediately.
Smith, who played college football for nearby Florida International University, had a career-best season in 2023 with the Falcons. He set career highs in targets (70), catches (50), and receiving yards (582) with three touchdowns.
Before Atlanta, Smith played two seasons in New England. He began his career with the Tennessee Titans, who drafted him in 2017 in the third round. He had a career high 8 touchdowns in his final season with Tennessee in 2020.
Smith would fill a very glaring shortcoming in Miami's offense: a red zone threat in the passing game. The 6'3" 248-pound tight end is a very capable receiver with good hands. Miami's current tight ends under contract for 2024 are Durham Smythe, Julian Hill, and Tanner Conner. Tyler Kroft is set to become a free agent.
