The 2025 NFL Draft is finally getting underway this week after months of evaluation and discussion. The Miami Dolphins' staff heads into the draft with a serious number of roster issues, particularly on the lines of scrimmage and in the secondary.
With that in mind, I see some particularly noteworthy things taking place in Green Bay.
The Dolphins will draft a Georgia Bulldog.
General manager Chris Grier has taken a couple of players over the last five years from the SEC powerhouse. He took LB Channing Tindall in the third round of the 2022 draft and OL Solomon Kindley in round 4 back in 2020. That hasn't worked out great for Miami, particularly with Kindley, who was waived back in August 2022.
However, with the level of elite talent that Georgia has churned out under Kirby Smart, it would be wise to take a closer look at the prospects coming out of Athens this year, and a number of them happen to correspond with need. S Malaki Starks is someone the Dolphins have been tied to in mock drafts. IOL Tate Ratledge, Jared Wilson, and Dylan Fairchild all could hear their names called before day two of the draft ends on Friday night. The Dolphins obviously have a dire need for a starter at guard.
And while not on many people's radar for Miami, star linebacker Jalon Walker could still be on the board at 13. With his versatility as a pass rusher and off ball linebacker, he could be a key chess piece to just about any defense, including Miami's.
As such, this feels like a year where Grier could finally pull the trigger on a Bulldog again.
The Dolphins will take multiple cornerbacks and linemen by the time the fourth round has come and gone.
As things stand now, the Miami Dolphins have five picks through the first four rounds. They have #13, #48, #98 (compensatory), #116, and #135 (compensatory).
It would not be surprising to me to see four of those spent on cornerbacks and linemen. But then again, that's exactly where they should be spending four of those five picks.
Miami should have a number of options available at 13, even if players like OL Armand Membou and CBs Will Johnson and Jahdae Barron are gone. But if they don't address a terribly empty cornerback room in their first two picks, that would be a major head scratcher. I expect they will. Also, a CB in the fourth round, players like UTSA's Zah Frazier and Cal's Nohl Williams – who led FBS with 7 interceptions last year – could be in play. OL and DL should be snagged in the first two days as well.
Bottom line, I think Miami does this week what it hasn't recently – addresses dire needs head on and quickly.
The Dolphins will take another running back earlier than some fans might like.
It might seem not too high on the totem pole, and it's really not compared to other areas of the roster, but this running back class is absolutely LOADED with talent. As good as I can remember in a long time.
The Dolphins have a good duo of young backs in De'Von Achane and Jaylen Wright, but they could use a bruiser. They signed Alexander Mattison, but that was just on a one-year deal. A player like Damien Martinez could be a great fit, but he could be gone by Friday. Ollie Gordon II is someone else the team has met with and could have their eye on for day Saturday.
Miami Dolphins’ self-created issues should force their hand in a clear direction in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft
