It's a homecoming for one former Miami Hurricanes standout.

CB Artie Burns has agreed to a one-year deal with the Miami Dolphins on Monday, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Burns is a player who's kind of hard to get a read on – despite extensive experience in the league.  A first-round pick in 2016 by the Pittsburgh Steelers, Burns spent the first four years of his career in the Steel City, appearing in all 16 games each of his first three years with 16 starts in 2017.

However, stints in Chicago and Seattle were injury shortened, with Burns appearing in just 3 games in 2022 and 4 games last year.  Burns missed most of last year while dealing with a toe injury.

His Pro Football Focus grades have also fluctuated significantly.  He had a strong start to 2024, at least, with a defensive grade of 88.6 and coverage mark of 89.6 in 4 games.

Burns at least provides another experienced body at the cornerback position, which is in dire straits after the release of starter Kendall Fuller.  The depth behind Fuller and Ramsey in 2024 was, let's say, less than ideal.  2023 second round pick Cam Smith hasn't lived up to his draft status through two seasons.

As such, Burns should be in the mix as a depth/third cornerback option, but his positional versatility also provides him value, as he's played both on the boundary and inside at nickel before.

Hopefully, for the Dolphins' sake, this is the first of a number of moves still to come to address their leaky cornerback room.  For now, the former Hurricane and Miami Northwestern standout is heading back to South Florida to play in Hard Rock Stadium once again.
