De'Von Achane has been a revelation for the Miami Dolphins. He has been knocking loudly on the door for offensive rookie of the year honors while staking a claim to the starting running back position on the best offense in the NFL. Quite the start for the young speedster, to be sure.
However, with Achane going on injured reserve with a knee injury, Raheem Mostert got the opportunity to dominate the Dolphins' backfield on Sunday in Miami's 42-21 win over the Carolina Panthers. He showed he still has plenty of juice in his 31-year old legs. His leap over Panthers CB CJ Henderson was one of the highlights of the day and ended up as the elevator photo his morning at the Dolphins' facility.
For the day, Mostert carried 17 times for 115 yards and two touchdowns. He also added 3 catches for 17 yards and another score. With 429 yards on 75 carries (5.7 yards per carry) and an eye-popping 9 rushing touchdowns (already a career high), he's well on pace to shattering his career best of 891 rushing yards in a season that he set last year.
Mostert's 20 touches is about the typical ceiling for him in a game. He's had 20 and 19 touches in two other games this season. The team won't want to put too much on his plate, given his injury history over the years. It's also just not been Mike McDaniel's way, as he likes to rotate his running backs.
And with Achane expected to be back after the bye week, he won't have to carry the load in a primary role for long, with the two being able to rotate and give the Dolphins undoubtedly the fastest and most explosive one-two punch out of the backfield of any team in the league.
Except it might be more accurate to say one-one punch, or one-A, one-B punch, because Mostert and Achane would be on the field as the starter for the majority of teams in the league right now.
