Miami Dolphins fans are understandably starved for a championship. Heck, even a playoff win right now would go a long way towards improving the morale of the fanbase sharply.
With the Florida Panthers on the verge of winning their first Stanley Cup ever, the Dolphins are about to become what the Cowboys have become in Dallas: the team in the region among the four major professional leagues with the longest championship draught.
But the newest Dolphin has a message for fans that they hope he is speaking into existence. Calais Campbell posted a video through the Dolphins' Twitter/X account on Tuesday morning confirming his signing and explaining, shortly and sweetly, his goal for the season.
"Yo Phins Fam, what's up, baby? Calais Campbell here. It's official. I am a Miami Dolphin. I'm excited about it. Can't wait to get to work. One job, baby: bring home that Lombardi. Let's get it."
Campbell played for the Miami Hurricanes, so this is a homecoming for him in a way, although he played his home games for the Canes from 2004-07 in the old Orange Bowl rather than Hard Rock Stadium. Delivering a championship for the city would be a great way to bookend his football career in South Florida.
The Dolphins' last playoff win came in the playoffs back in 2000, when they knocked off the Indianapolis Colts and second-year quarterback Peyton Manning 23-17 in overtime. Jay Fiedler completed 19 of 34 passes for 195 yards with a touchdown and 3 interceptions. However, Lamar Smith's 209 yards and 2 touchdowns on 40 carries led the day for Miami.
Since then, the Dolphins have claimed just one division title (2008) and made five futile playoff appearances, bowing out in the wild card round all five times.
Sure, Campbell's words should be the goal every season for Miami. But hearing them after the Dolphins looked like a Super Bowl contender for much of the season should be a welcome sound to Miami fans. We'll see this fall if the veteran defender can help the Fins get over the hump.
