'Can't hold his hand and wait for him anymore' – Dolphins GM Chris Grier puts former second-round pick on notice days before the 2025 NFL Draft

The Miami Dolphins are teetering on the edge of disaster in their cornerback room with general manager Chris Grier acknowledging on Tuesday during his press conference that the team is indeed looking to trade star cornerback Jalen Ramsey after coming to a mutual agreement, according to Grier.
If Ramsey indeed ends up being traded, that would leave the Dolphins with starting cornerback options of Kader Kohou, Cam Smith, Ethan Bonner, Storm Duck, and Artie Burns. That's….not ideal.
Out of that group, Grier turned his attention during his press conference to Smith, who he drafted in the second round with the 51st overall pick in 2023. He did not mince words, to put it mildly.
Dolphins general manager Chris Grier calls out 2023 second round pick Cam Smith.
"Cam Smith needs to come through at the end of the day," Grier said. "He's got to stay healthy and be on the field. He has shown some flashes, but this is a very big year for him. He knows what's expected, because can't hold his hand and wait for him anymore."
It's not every day that you hear Grier, who tends to hold his feelings relatively close to the vest regarding his players, put a player publicly on blast like he did with Smith.
However, he's not at all out of line in doing it. Smith has been a substantial disappointment in his first two years with the Dolphins. He saw just 22 snaps in 2023 and appeared in just 6 games in 2024, seeing 133 snaps. His 33.6 Pro Football Focus grade was the second worst on the team out of 33 defenders. He allowed catches on 16 of 19 passes thrown his way for a passer rating allowed of 125.7 with a PFF coverage grade of 30.1.
Injuries have been a major issue for the young defender from South Carolina. He missed the first six games of last season with a hamstring injury that plagued him throughout training camp. Then, a shoulder injury against the Green Bay Packers put him back on injured reserve and ended his season.
The Dolphins will have little choice but to rely on Smith at this point as a key part of their secondary in 2025. That will require a far greater ability to stay healthy than he's shown so far.
We'll see soon enough how much competition Grier adds to the room next week when the NFL Draft gets underway on April 24 from Green Bay, Wisconsin.
A tweet from Jalen Ramsey might have pulled back the curtain on one of his preferred trade destinations
It appears the former All-Pro could be heading out of town soon
