The Miami Dolphins are reportedly taking a major step towards the possible return of a key piece of their roster.
According to Mike McDaniel during his Monday press conference, the team is opening Bradley Chubb's 21-day window to return from the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, along with Cameron Goode.
"Well, of course their window will be opening," McDaniel quipped in response to a question about it. "They'll be out there practicing on Wednesday and to me those are the – I think very impactful just to have them on the practice field. That's never lost on teammates when you have an extensive injury that happens in season. So, then you are finishing the season rehabbing, the offseason program they're watching them rehab, the beginning of the season they're watching them rehab. While everyone is on vacation, they are here rehabbing.
"So, it will be exciting to get their windows started, and they'll be practicing on Wednesday."
Chubb suffered a torn ACL during the final minutes of Miami's 56-19 loss to Baltimore in Week 17 of last season. While Jaelan Phillips – who suffered a torn Achilles tendon on Black Friday against the New York Jets last season – was able to return for the start of the season, the progress been slower for Chubb.
Goode was the next up in a series of unfortunate and serious injuries to strike the roster late in 2023. He suffered a torn patellar tendon during the Dolphins' 21-14 loss to the Buffalo Bills in the regular season finale.
The return of one or both would provide a strong boost to the Dolphins' outside pass rush. While Chop Robinson has played well the last month and Calais Campbell and Emmanuel Ogbah have been pleasant surprises this year, a healthy and effective Chubb would be big for a defense that just got pushed around on Thursday night in Green Bay.
The Dolphins have 21 days from today to elevate either one from the injured reserve list to the active roster. If they don't, then both players would be out for the remainder of the season.
Although it might be a little bit optimistic this soon, we'll find out on Friday when the final injury report is released if Chubb and/or Goode have any chance to suit up when the Dolphins and New York Jets face off on Sunday at Hard Rock Stadium.
