The Miami Dolphins might be without one of the best players on their roster for a significant period of time.

That least seems to be the case based upon the word in the locker room after the Dolphins' 15-10 win over the New England Patriots on Sunday afternoon at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts.

According to the Miami Herald's Omar Kelly, safety Jevon Holland was seen in the locker room with a cast on his hand and talking with teammates about surgery to repair the injury.

Holland suffered a hand injury in the fourth quarter.  After being initially designated as questionable to return, he was later downgraded to out by the team.

It goes without saying that potentially losing a player of Holland's skills are a massive blow for the back end of the defense.  Miami is already dealing with the absence of Jordan Poyer, who missed the game on Sunday while working to recover from a shin injury that kept him out of practice all week. Marcus Maye drew the start alongside Holland on Sunday.

Now, it's looking more like the Dolphins could possibly be down both of their starting safeties from Week 1 against the Indianapolis Colts next week, and in Holland's case a trip to the injured reserve list seems likely if surgery is involved.

It's a tough blow for a team that really, really is overdue for a respite from the injury woes that have killed them the last two years.  So far, it doesn't look that that relief will be coming in 2024.

UPDATE (9:15 pm ET): Per NFL Network reporter Ian Rapoport, Holland suffered a broken bone in his hand, which is expected to sideline him for some time.
