The Miami Dolphins saw one of their bigger off-season free agent signings leave them abruptly right before training camp.  Now, it appears as though a reunion is in order.

Edge Shaq Barrett is reportedly coming out of retirement, per multiple sources.

The news appeared to catch Dolphins defensive coordinator off guard on Tuesday.  The veteran coach was reportedly surprised by the news, per Pro Football Network's Adam Beasley.

Barrett, who won Super Bowls with the Denver Broncos and Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2015 and 2020, respectively, signed with the Dolphins on a one-year deal worth up to $9 million back in March.  It was a logical addition for a roster that saw both of its edge rushers suffer devastating injuries during the final two months of the season.

However, Barrett never made it to camp, opting instead to retire days before.  He announced his retirement on Instagram, citing a desire to spend more time with his family.

Now, it appears as though the former Pro Bowler is set to return to the gridiron.  The Dolphins hold his rights, and therefore he would have to be waived and claimed (or signed as a free agent if he clears waivers) for him to be able to play elsewhere.

Per Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, Barrett is "fine" with playing for Miami.

Barrett hasn't had a down of live game activity since the 2023 season, and it's unknown what kind of football shape he's in at the moment.  However, the Dolphins still have five weeks left after taking on the Packers on Thursday, so there's time for Barrett to get into shape for a stretch run.

In the meantime, Miami has managed to get by without Bradley Chubb and Jaelan Phillips – who suffered another brutal season-ending injury in 2024 – with the emergence of rookie Chop Robinson, who's totaled 3.5 sacks over the last four games. Calais Campbell and Emmanuel Ogbah have been productive, with Quinton Bell contributing as well.
