The Miami Dolphins continue their 2024 preseason on Saturday night against the Washington Commanders at 7:00 pm ET from Hard Rock Stadium.
With one week in the books, Mike McDaniel and his staff got the chance to evaluate the roster in a live game environment. Naturally a number of players flourished and improved their chances while others saw their path to the roster or more playing time become steeper.
Here are three Miami Dolphins who could really use a big performance in Week Two of the preseason:
1) Willie Snead IV
Snead had a big drop in the second quarter, finishing the game with no catches on three targets. Miami could use some experience at the position right now with some guys banged up, but so far Snead hasn't gone out and seized the opportunity
That needs to change on Saturday night against a team the Dolphins' passing game should be able to do damage with, even with some struggles at quarterback.
2) Mike White
Speaking of struggles at quarterback, White looked terrible against the Falcons, going 4 of 14 for 26 yards. He continues to leave the door for the QB2 job wide open for 2022 seventh-round draft pick Skylar Thompson. Fortunately for White, Thompson hasn't been able to walk through it yet. The QBs combined to go 12/32 for 121 yards with a touchdown and interception.
It's just not good enough from Miami's backup QB. However, as White is more experienced and probably playing worse despite being listed as QB2 on the depth chart, he really needs to step up. Otherwise, a good showing from Thompson could be enough to drop him down to the team's QB3 range, where anything could happen as far as making the roster.
3) Duke Riley
Riley wasn't awful in Week One. He was involved on the play where Siran Neal forced and recovered the fumble in the first quarter.
This is more speaking to the guys behind him on the depth chart making plays. Channing Tindall had an impressive blitz and sack, and pressure is something the Dolphins absolutely need in a big way this year as their edge rushers work to get healthy. Curtis Bolton also had a solid day with a 77.2 PFF grade for the game.
Riley could use some impact plays over the next two games to secure a roster spot. No time like the present to make that happen.
