The Miami Dolphins' offensive line isn't going to be fully intact when the season starts, per Mike McDaniel on Monday. Starting left guard Isaiah Wynn is going on the reserve/PUP list, which means he will miss at least the first four games of the 2024 season.
Starting center Aaron Brewer is also banged up, with McDaniel being non-committal to Brewer being ready for Week One.
As such, during his press conference on Monday afternoon, QB Tua Tagovailoa was asked about his confidence level of the line he's playing behind, particularly the interior. His answer was…..interesting.
"Well, brother, I get the ball out fast, so I am confident with anybody we’ve got up there. (laughter) I’ll tell you that. I’m confident with anybody we get out there.
It was perhaps a bit of a tongue-in-cheek moment from the Dolphins' franchise quarterback. He was in a rather positive mood, to his credit, so it could have just been having a little bit of fun in the moment with the question he was presented with.
Or….perhaps there was also a little bit of truth to it, which there sometimes is in jest. With Wynn out for at least a month and Brewer's availability in flux, the Dolphins could be looking at an interior of Rob Jones, Liam Eichenberg and either Jake Driscoll or Lester Cotton to start the season. That's not ideal and simply not nearly as good as one that included Wynn, Connor Williams, and Robert Hunt to start the season in 2023. Quite the drop off, actually.
So, it might honestly be necessary for Tua to have to release the ball earlier than he otherwise would have. Starters are starters for a reason. Heck, Bucs standout DL Vita Vea showed Driscoll the caliber of player that starting offensive linemen will have to face in humbling fashion in the preseason.
After all, sometimes it's better to laugh than cry. Perhaps that's simply what Tua was doing.
