Many Miami Dolphins fans went into the offseason with a particularly uneasy feeling. That was in no small part due to Tyreek Hill's postgame comments after the Dolphins' 32-20 loss to the New York Jets in Week 18.
Hill made several comments to the media after the game that appeared to indicate a desire to leave, including, "I'm out, bro". That spurred speculation that the 2023 first-team All-Pro could be on the move this offseason.
However, after Friday, it appears as though concerned Dolphins fans can exhale. Hill joined Kay Adams on her show, Up and Adams, and he said it was just a matter of frustration and that he and his quarterback Tua Tagovailoa want to win moving forward.
"You know, Tua, he's my guy. Always will be my guy no matter what. I'm sure he understands my frustration. We all want to win. Tua, he's another competitor, and he's a hell of a competitor. A lot of people don't know that. He's a winner. Consistent. So, I'm looking forward to just us continuing to build our relationship even more.
"And this is my public apology. This is my public apology to you, Tua. I love you, bro."
Regarding whether Hill was saying sorry to his team, Hill acknowledged he was, but claimed his teammates know where he was coming from.
"On God, yeah. But they already know that though. They know I'm not that kind of player though. I'm not. A lot of people might say 'Reek is a hot head. He's this, he's that.' But all my teammates know, I come to work every day. I bust my tail. I show up to the meetings on time, and I do what I've got to do."
2024 was a gigantic step back for Hill, Tua, and the entire offense. The Dolphins' passing attack when from one of the most exciting in the league filled with big plays to a far less explosive and more methodical approach. Hill's receiving yards were cut almost in half, from 1799 to 959. His catches (119 to 81) and receiving touchdowns (13 to 6) also dropped dramatically.
This offseason will be crucial for Mike McDaniel to figure out how opposing defenses were able to bottle his passing game so much better than they did in 2023. He and Chris Grier will have the next few months to find ways to establish a better run game and pieces that can help the passing game as well, with free agency a little over a month away and the draft a little over two.
2024 is going to have to be a better one for McDaniel and his offense. Fortunately, it sounds like his biggest weapon still wants to be a part of it.
