If you're looking for two people to lie to you and make you feel lighter than you are, you probably don't want to ask two particular Miami Dolphins to come into the room and size you up.
Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle both met with the media on Tuesday, and both had some amusingly candid comments about the weight of their quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. Not his current weight, mind you, but where he was at the end of the 2023 season.
Tagovailoa unquestionably looks significantly slimmer in early June compared to when Hill saw him at the Pro Bowl in early February when the Dolphins' QB was, in his words, "fat as sh*t". Tagovailoa should be in far better shape, if he can maintain his current svelte frame, to be able to scramble and evade rushers and tacklers this fall.
Of course, Tagovailoa's increased size in 2023 was seen by many as a good thing to help him absorb hits that have led to his health struggles in his first three seasons. Tagovailoa came into training camp last fall at 227 pounds, which drew some childish comments from Ryan Clark and a rebuke from Tagovailoa himself.
With the increased size and jiu-jitsu training to help counter the issues he had with falling and sustaining injuries, Tagovailoa made it through a full 17 games for the first time in his career last year. Now, he will look to help the Dolphins take the next step and win their first playoff game since the 1999 season next fall. Of course, that is if he and the team can get their contract negotiation hammered out.
For now, Tagovailoa appears physically fit to handle his duties this upcoming season. And it appears his teammates will have to find something else to poke fun at him about.
