The Miami Dolphins, it appears, are giving a local South Florida NFL hopeful an extended look ahead of the NFL Draft later this month.

The Dolphins reportedly worked out Florida International University inside linebacker Donovan Manuel on Friday.

Manuel had a very productive season last year for the Panthers, totaling 121 combined tackles with 15.5 tackles for loss and 5 forced fumbled.  The latter statistic was tied for the most in all of FBS college football.  He was also top 20 in FBS in both tackles per game and tackles for loss.

The Dolphins certainly could use some quality depth and some playmaking ability in their linebacking corps.  Miami has plenty of picks late in the draft where Manuel likely slots. The Dolphins select in the fifth round 157th overall pick.  They have two more picks in round six (183 and 197 overall) before finishing up with the 241st overall pick in the seventh round.  Manuel likely fits as a sixth or seventh round pick, if not an undrafted free agent signed after the draft is completed.

Still, it's always pretty cool to see a player trade their college jersey for an NFL one in the same town.  The Dolphins have done it recently with former Miami Hurricanes edge rusher Jaelan Phillips, whom they drafted in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft.  We'll see soon enough if Manuel ends up on the Baptist Health Training Complex practice field after the NFL Draft has come and gone at the end of the month.
