Tua Tagovailoa has executed very well as the Miami Dolphins quarterback so far this season.
Now he can add successful play caller to his resume.
The Dolphins' signal caller called the play that resulted in a Tyreek Hill 69-yard touchdown on Sunday in Miami's 31-16 win over the New York Giants at Hard Rock Stadium.
Tagovailoa stated in his postgame press conference that the play call came in from the sideline, but that he decided to go with a different play.
"It was the wrong play call," Tagovailoa said. "And you can ask Mike about that. I don't think I should be saying that was wrong play call. I just called the wrong play. I called my own play. So you guys might want to ask Mike about that one. But it was the wrong play call.
"He said a play, and I told him I misheard him as I was looking at it (wristband)," said Tagovailoa with a smile. "And I was just like, 'oh, let's just run this play.'"
Chuckling and smiling, Tagovailoa followed up: "I did mishear him. Yes, let's say that, guys."
Wrong play call or not, it worked. Hill blew past his defender, Tagovailoa put the ball on the money, and the Dolphins added yet another highlight touchdown to their season tape.
Mike McDaniel, to his credit, let the play continue when the players broke the huddle going to a different formation than he'd called.
Well, I was processing it at live speed. And since other guys weren't looking around, like they, they were convicted in whatever they were doing. And a lot of times, that's the most important play that you can have is people that believe in what whatever is going on. So, to me, the thought crossed my mind immediately when the when they broke the huddle and people were on the wrong side. And then once I saw people moving with conviction, I was like, 'hey, let's, let's see what play caller Tua has for us.' And I would advise him to be very choice with his selections, because right now his percentage as a play caller is outstanding. – Mike McDaniel via Dolphins YouTube channel
McDaniel added: "Shoot if he thinks he's got a better thought than I do, I would prefer him to do that. Whether he heard or not, you know, he knows for a fact that regardless of what happens if he's able to execute out there, that I'm not going to be mad at it. So I definitely was not upset while I watched Tyreek run down the sideline."
Tyreek and Tagovailoa are finding new ways to help the Dolphins' offense reach team and NFL records each week at home. And fortunately for the Miami signal-caller, he has a coach that doesn't care how it gets done – whether the idea comes from his own head or McDaniel's.
