The news came down from Mike McDaniel yesterday regarding De'Von Achane dealing with a knee injury. However, he wasn't able to give any information regarding extent of the injury or a timetable for his absence.
The latter became a little bit clearer today, and it's not what Miami Dolphins fans were hoping for.
NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported Tuesday that the Dolphins' star rookie is expected to miss multiple weeks with his knee issue. Ian Rapoport added that the belief is that Achane will be week to week.
ESPN's Adam Schefter has a bit more of a concerning report, stating that Achane could even be an injured reserve candidate.
If the injury truly is week to week, then that would conceivably allow him to avoid being placed on injured reserve and missing the next four weeks. However, that determination will be made before the Dolphins and Panthers face off this Sunday.
Regardless of the timetable, it's a significant blow to Miami's offense. Simply put, Achane has been the best running back in the NFL this season. He's putting up numbers that the best high school running back in the country would put up against an average high school defense. 460 yards on 38 carries. 12.1 yards per carry. It's a small sample size, sure, and not sustainable long-term, but that's still absolutely ludicrous.
However, Miami has players coming back that are more than capable of producing for the Dolphins. Jeff Wilson, Jr. is eligible to come off injured reserve, and the Dolphins will activate the practice window for his return, per ESPN's Marcel Louis-Jacques. Salvon Ahmed appears to be over the groin issue that's limited him the past couple of weeks. Ahmed ran very well in the preseason and should see an expanded role this week behind starter Raheem Mostert.
It's unfortunate timing for the streaking rookie of the year candidate, but his chances will be waiting for him when he's able to get back on the field.
