The Miami Dolphins are in a very challenging cap position entering the 2024 league year.  They're the second highest over the cap in the league, trailing only the New Orleans Saints.

Fortunately, that figure might be a good bit lower when the 2024 salary cap number is released before the new league year begins.  According to Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio, that number could be close to $250 million.

According to OverTheCap.com, the Dolphins sit at almost $52 million over the cap and almost $60 million over the cap in effective cap space.  Effective cap space is different in that it takes into account what it will take to get 51 players and an entire draft class under contract.  As such, it's the more realistic number that a team will have to account for

However, the number that they're over is $242 million.  If the salary cap number is indeed at or near $250 million, that's a good $8 million – or close to it – that the Dolphins don't have to figure out how to clear through a restructure or release.  With the potential need to use the franchise tag on Christian Wilkins, which would count as $20.943 against the salary cap in 2024, $8 million could go a long way.

Chris Grier will undoubtedly have his work cut out to not just get under the cap, but to get far enough space on the other side to handle a number of roster needs, including addressing a near-vacant interior offensive line and a new deal with Wilkins.  However, a little bit of help to get there sure doesn't hurt.
