Here's what I liked and what I didn't from the game…
What I liked
– Terrific opening defensive series. David Long, Jr. had a tackle for loss on Derrick Henry and Andrew Van Ginkel followed it with a tackle of Treylon Burks for no gain. An incompletion on third down led to a punt.
– The catch by Tyrek Hill on third down on the opening drive. Dove and made a spectacular catch along the sideline. Further proof that the "he's just fast" crowd is very wrong.
– Zach Sieler read the screen pass on third-and-11, stepped in front, and rumbled five yards to the end zone. Incredible answer to a deflating turnover three plays earlier.
– Miami's defensive front had a solid first half, with a sack, a deflection, a pick six, and regular pressure.
– Miami's running game was on point in the first half. Mostert and De'Von Achane totaled 92 rushing yards on only 14 carries. More handoffs should be in the playbook in the second half, especially with Hill having a wrapped ankle and no helmet on the sideline.
– Good answer to start the second half. It was a methodical drive to get inside the five-yard line with Tua finding Cedric Wilson, Jr. for gains of 22 and 8 on back-to-back plays. Couldn't convert on third-and-goal from the 2, but still a solid 11-play, 7-yard scoring drive.
– Kader Kohou nearly got home on a blitz midway through the third quarter. He forced an errant throw that was nearly intercepted. It still helped force a punt three plays later.
– The anticipation and placement on the throw from Tua to Hill early in the fourth quarter for 25 yards. Absolute dart to the five-yard line. Unfortunately, it resulted in another field goal to tie things up at 13.
– Elijah Campbell was Johnny on the spot when Eric Garror muffed a bouncing punt and set the Dolphins up at the seven-yard line. Mostert took it in two plays later and just got the ball over the line by inches. Mike McDaniel finally ran the ball inside the 10-yard line, and it paid off. Took way too long tonight.
– On the following play, Derrick Henry couldn't handle a pitch from Levis, and Bradley Chubb recovered for the Dolphins. Miami kept it on the ground, and two plays later Mostert was in the end zone for his second touchdown in the last five minutes and what seemed like a commanding 27-13 lead with 4:34 left. If only…
What I didn't
– Liam Eichenberg's terrible snap on second and goal at the three. He came in after Connor Willams went down a few plays before with an apparently significant knee injury. Eichenberg snapped it well short and into his own rear end. Tua couldn't grab it, and it was recovered by Tennessee's TK McLendon, Jr. Extremely unfortunate occurrence, as the offense was rolling. Eichenberg was also flagged for holding and a false start in the first half. A bad start, to put it mildly.
– The horse collar tackle on Tyreek Hill late in the first quarter. Wasn't called, and it resulted in Hill staying down for a minute before eventually running it off across the field to the relief of the crowd. That was a clear horse collar and a dangerous tackle that should have been flagged. It kept Hill off the field for much of the game with an ankle injury, and that had a massive ripple effect on Miami's offense for the rest of the game.
– Bradley Chubb missed Will Levis on a sack that would have put the Titans at the edge of field goal range. However, Levis broke free and scrambled for a gain of five yards to set up third-and-5. Chubb took off and slammed his head in frustration, which resulted in a first down for Tennessee inside the red zone. They would go on to score and tie up the game at 7 with 6:53 left in the first half. That simply can't happen. Have to have more discipline there.
– Jason Sanders' field goal was blocked coming out of the first half two-minute warning. A Tennessee defender bulled his way through the middle of the line and was able to deflect it. Something else that can't happen at this level.
– Tua had at least three throws that were nearly interceptions in the first half. Some ugly throws that Miami was fortunate didn't end up going the other way. The protection was quite poor from Miami's offense line in the first half and Tua had to move some, but he was uncharacteristically off target tonight.
– Hopkins got away with offensive pass interference on his gain of 45 yards in the half's final seconds. He used one arm to pull Howard to the ground and grabbed the ball with the other. A sneaky move, but a foul that should have been flagged nonetheless. Tennessee would capitalize with a field goal to take a 10-7 lead into halftime.
– I wasn't a fan of the fade pattern to Cedric Wilson, Jr. on third-and-goal at the 2 on the first drive of the second half. The Dolphins had been pounding the ball. I would have kept it on the ground and made it four down territory if they got close on third down. Instead, it was broken up by Sean Murphy-Bunting and Miami had to settle for a field goal.
– Tua and Achane missed on a wide-open throw. Achane slowed down while going up the sideline but then turned on the jets and leapt but couldn't quite reach the ball. It's hard to fault Tua there based on how Achane slowed down. It's just unfortunate they couldn't connect because that would have likely been a touchdown.
– Everything after the Dolphins took a 27-13 lead. Miami went with soft coverage, and Levis and the Titans strolled their way 75 yards to the end zone in less than 2 minutes. Tennessee's receivers had chunks of yardage underneath, and they took what Miami gave them time and again. Levis scrambled, bought time, and found Hopkins for a 3-yard score. Vrabel's decision to go for two paid dividends as well, as Levis connected with Nick Westbrook-Ikhine.
– The three and out by Miami continued the momentum for Tennessee, who capitalized quickly. A 36-yard completion across the field to Hopkins got things started, and a 16-yard catch and run by Okonkwo put the Titans in the red zone. Two plays later, Henry bowled into the end zone from four yards out to give the Titans the lead at 28-27.
– Hill was unable to go on the final drive, and Miami's offense couldn't do a thing. That's largely because Miami's backup-laden offensive line couldn't give Tua enough time to allow deeper routes to get down the field. Harold Landry sacked Tua on fourth down to clinch the game for the Titans.
– An epic collapse after holding a 14-point lead with under 3 minutes left.
