The NFL keeps punishing players for on-field incidents. On Saturday, the league announced that Miami Dolphins tight end Jonnu Smith was fined $11,248 because of a play during the first quarter of the loss to the Green Bay Packers on Thanksgiving.
Smith was fined because of unnecessary roughness (striking/kicking/kneeing).
The tight end has been one of the most productive players for the Miami Dolphins this season. In 12 games, Jonnu Smith has had 58 receptions, 648 receiving yards, and four receiving touchdowns in 74 targets. It's by far the most prolific season of his career.
Smith, who has been in the NFL since 2017, has played for the Tennessee Titans, New England Patriots, and Atlanta Falcons.
Back in the offseason, he signed a two-year, $8.4 million contract with the Dolphins. Therefore, he will still be under contract next season.
While it's tough to see football players losing money like that for normal plays, at least it goes to a good cause. The fines collected are donated to the Professional Athletes Foundation to support legends in need.
In Week 13, 17 plays resulted in fines out of 2,639 total plays around the NFL, which means that .64% of the plays. Jonnu Smith was the only Dolphins player fined this week.
