NFL insider says Dolphins’ AFC rival is kicking the tires on Tua Tagovailoa
An ironic suitor could be emerging for the likely soon-to-be-former Dolphins quarterback.
The new-look Miami Dolphins are in the midst of a needed franchise overhaul that’s included Mike McDaniel, Chris Grier, and Tyreek Hill, for starters. Tua Tagovailoa is next on the list to be handled, and it’s likely with a release, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
However, Tua isn’t going to be without suitors, and a very notable one is emerging, according to the NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo. The New York Jets have been calling and doing their homework about Tagovailoa.

“And then there’s Tua Tagovailoa,” Garofalo said. “Sort of like Kyler Murray in that, if he gets cut, he’s going to be available for potentially the veteran minimum to come in and be a starting caliber quarterback. So, financially, it makes a lot of sense.
“Teams are doing work on Tua from my understanding. The Jets among them, making some calls to get the fullest sense of who Tua is as a person. The Jets have multiple options when it comes to the quarterback situation, and Tua, I believe is among those. So, let’s see if the Jets can keep him in the AFC East and what happens here with Tua in the near future.”
Garafolo doesn’t say that the Dolphins and Jets are discussing the possibility of a trade. It sounds more like the Jets are just kicking the tires on Tua as far as whether he’d be a potential fit in free agency following a release.
It’s a bit puzzling, if Tua has a competitive market, how he’d sign for the veteran minimum. With a number of teams in need of a starting caliber quarterback to either compete for a starting job or serve as a prime backup option, there should be multiple interested parties. When on his game and in the right system, Tagovailoa has proven to be capable of sparking an effective passing game.
As for the Jets, well, it’s hard to imagine a team knowing him better from a football perspective. The Dolphins went 8-0 against their AFC East rival with Tagovailoa on the field.
It appears as though the Jets might be going with the old mantra: if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em.
