Talk about a tough week at the office. For the Miami Dolphins, there’s been a whole bunch of them as of late. A 1-4 start that has featured struggles on defense, some frustrating special teams lapses and far too many inconsistencies on offense has left the Dolphins with a lot of hardship early on in 2025.

But for one of Miami’s underdog defenders in particular, this week was brutal from start to finish. And it just got even worse.

Dolphins release Cornell Armstrong after being placed on injured reserve earlier in the week

Cornell Armstrong, who had served as the Dolphins’ nickel defender the last two weeks, suffered a hamstring injury against the Panthers that pulled him from the game and ultimately landed him on injured reserve earlier this week amid a roster shuffle to help keep enough bodies available in Miami’s secondary to field a full unit.

Originally a draft selection by Miami in 2018, Armstrong had bounced around the league before spending 2024 off of a roster in the fall before getting a second chance with Miami.

Notable Miami Dolphins Players On Injured Reserve Entering Week 6

  • Cornerback: Kader Kohou, Artie Burns, Jason Marshall Jr. (R)
  • Offensive line: Austin Jackson, James Daniels, Andrew Meyer
  • Wide receiver: Tyreek Hill
  • Kicker: Jason Sanders

It was a fleeting opportunity and now Miami is cutting him loose with an injury settlement. It alleviates any temptation for the Dolphins to use one of their injured reserve return slots on the cornerback — as Miami is likely seeking to use half of those spots for kicker Jason Sanders, offensive lineman Andrew Meyer, tackle Austin Jackson, and guard James Daniels.

Given that we’re not even mid-way through October, preserving those other spots is sensible. And, unfortunately for Armstrong, finding similar production should not be difficult to achieve. Accordingly, his bad week in Miami has just got even worse — he’s out with the Dolphins yet again.
