One of the most mysterious figures of the 2025 Dolphins season is getting a mulligan as Miami reportedly strikes deal for extension
One 2025 Miami Dolphin is getting a mulligan.
The 2025 season was unkind to many Miami Dolphins.
The list starts with names like Chris Grier, Mike McDaniel, and Tua Tagovailoa. The trio of power players in Miami’s operation have all been supplanted as we enter into a new year of the league year. But the list extends well beyond those at the top of the food chain. One such player who had a forgettable season despite an impactful training camp is going to get another chance in South Florida, however. The Dolphins are reportedly bringing back free agent LB Willie Gay Jr. for another go.
Dolphins reportedly re-signing LB Willie Gay Jr.
Willie Gay was undeniable in training camp. My butt was parked in the stands for the first week of practices and Gay was a juice guy who made plays every single day. And when I say every single day, you may believe I mean “a lot of times”. But what I mean is EVERY. SINGLE. DAY.
Gay was AWESOME in camp. He was disruptive, he found the football, he got opportunities in coverage and as a pass rusher. He looked like an NFL starter. And then the regular season came. And all that impact and flash? It disappeared. So much so that Gay set a career-low in snaps this past season with just 131 defensive snaps.
Former defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver conceded early in the season that they needed to find more ways to get Gay onto the football field, but it never really materialized. 47 of his 137 snaps came in the final two weeks of the season and Gay had just 5 games with double digit defensive snaps. A new regime in Miami very clearly sees something here — as he’s getting a new contract in Miami and a second chance to make that strong first impression show up on the field. I hope he makes the most of it.
