The best thing going for Dolphins quarterback Quinn Ewers is that he already gets ‘it’
The quarterback position is a unique beast. Ewers seems to have a grasp on the root of it all.
The Miami Dolphins‘ decision to change quarterbacks a few weeks back from Tua Tagovailoa to Quinn Ewers was, and also wasn’t, surprising. Once the Dolphins were mathematically eliminated from the postseason and Tagovailoa’s struggles continued, head coach Mike McDaniel made the change. The hope? A different skill set and presence in the huddle could spur some positive change in a season that was by and large stuck in the mud when passing the football.
The surprising part of the move was the willingness to do so despite some big picture questions the move would (and has) created. But one thing that the Dolphins and their fans should respect about the change is how Ewers has handled the opportunity thus far. The play has had a fair share of ups and downs, as you’d expect from any rookie. But the part everyone should appreciate is that Quinn Ewers, in spite of his youth, seems to get “it”.
Quinn Ewers gets ‘it’ at quarterback already, which is pretty cool to see

““The offense goes as the quarterback and the head coach go. I feel like the offense embodies the personality of the head coach and of the quarterback, so I just want to instill the confidence in each play that I announce to the o-line and to the skill players. I want to speak confidence in them from the very jump, which I think is important each and every play. There’s not a specific time that it started or anything, it’s just something I like to carry with me.”
— Quinn Ewers on his confidence as the Dolphins’ starting quarterback to close 2025
The quarterback position in many ways does transcend an individual skill set. Tua Tagovailoa is a great example of it. He’s the most prolific athlete or thrower but, when at his best, he was a force multiplier for the strengths of the players around him and allowed Miami to quickly dish the football out to athletes in space. That element hasn’t been the same this season — and Tagovailoa’s leadership has drawn some ire this year, too.
He bristled at the idea that his turnovers come “in bunches” early in the season before creating a very public mess a few weeks later after a loss to the Chargers — citing his teammates’ timeliness and attendance at players-only meetings as an issue. It serves as an additional layer of disappointment amid the quarterback’s play in 2025.
This is, presumably, no longer Tagovailoa’s show. Ewers will start the final game of the season against New England and his future status in Miami is a blank canvas amid a lot of uncertainty atop the football operation. Tagovailoa’s book appears primed to close in South Florida for good despite the overhead and sunk cost involved.
You wouldn’t expect Quinn Ewers to come in and be loud, brash, or anything else that’s distracting or negative as a late-round rookie. But his perspective about this quarterback position and the power that it holds with the offense and his teammates is one that is wise beyond his years. So while we all may be intrigued but uncertain of what Ewers’ ceiling is in Miami, it should be fair to say we can all respect his approach to the biggest unseen contribution of a quarterback. He’s got that part figured out already.
