The Dolphins finally make official their intentions for quarterback Tua Tagovailoa
Don’t cry because it is over. Smile because it happened. Or don’t, I don’t care.
Tua’s time has run out. The Miami Dolphins are releasing their long-time veteran quarterback.
Miami’s intentions with Tua haven’t really been much of a secret — the team is moving in a new collective direction and the scar tissue from the time in Miami has been painful enough for all involved. Tua himself said he’d like a fresh start. The Dolphins brass clearly thought so too, what with them flushing the entire leadership group of Miami out and all that. They’ll all get their fresh start — Tua is being released after the start of the league year.
Dolphins announce intention to release QB Tua Tagovailoa after league year opens on Wednesday
“I recently informed Tua and his representation that we are going to move in a new direction at the quarterback position and will be releasing him after the start of the new league year.
As I shared with Tua, I have great respect for the person and player he is. On behalf of the Miami Dolphins, I expressed our gratitude for his many contributions, both on the field and in the community, during his six seasons in Miami.
As we move forward, we will be focused on infusing competition across the roster and establishing a strong foundation for this team as we work towards building a sustained winner.” — GM Jon-Eric Sullivan
Tua’s time with the Dolphins wasn’t without its highs. But the constant strain and struggle against better teams and an overall inability to evolve the passing offense past its initial form with Mike McDaniel in 2022 and 2023 proved fatal. Tagovailoa’s own durability issues further complicated the prospect of a continued future in Miami, while also sinking a promising 2022 team and striking any chance of a postseason appearance for the team in 2024.
The Dolphins will now look to add to their quarterback room and push forward, while Tagovailoa looks to pick up the pieces of his career. He’ll have millions of reasons ($54 million of them, to be exact) to land on his feet.
