The Dolphins made a massive change to their quarterback room ahead of their Week 7 contest against the Cleveland Browns — here’s what it means for game day
So this is a thing that happened…
Any time that a team struggles in the first half of a season, it isn’t abnormal to see them start to gravitate towards some younger talent and offer elevated playing time to see what guys do (or don’t) have in real action. For the Miami Dolphins, it appears as though that process may have formally started. The Dolphins are opening a competition between cornerbacks Jack Jones and Ethan Bonner for playing time — but the biggest revelation about the Dolphins’ depth chart became apparent on Sunday morning when the inactives list was published.
The Miami Dolphins have a new backup quarterback as of Week 7 and his name is Quinn Ewers.
Dolphins elevate Quinn Ewers to the backup quarterback role
The news became evident when the Dolphins released their inactives list for Sunday’s Week 7 contest against the Cleveland Browns. Ewers, a seventh-round draft choice in the 2025 NFL Draft, replaces free agent quarterback addition Zach Wilson. Wilson, who signed a one-year, $6 million contract with Miami in March, will now serve as the emergency third quarterback for Miami.
Wilson’s playing time is now dependent on both of Miami’s other quarterbacks, Ewers and starter Tua Tagovailoa, being physically unable to play.

- Third-string: Zach Wilson
What should you make of this development for Miami?
It is, admittedly, a fascinating decision. There’s an opportunity for Ewers to now play at a moment’s notice. According to the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson, the Dolphins “love his arm and how hard he’s worked“. So this appears to be a nod to Ewers more than anything else. But what could it mean later in the season if the Dolphins continue to struggle? There’s a power dynamic with Miami’s football team that could be shifting if the losing continues. It’s hard to imagine that any drastic changes at the position could be a thing that saves jobs — especially when the powers that be were a part of a massive extension for quarterback Tua Tagovailoa just one year ago.
Nevertheless, Ewers has struck a big move in Miami’s quarterback room. With the trade deadline just a few weeks away, could a quarterback injury elsewhere in the league open the door for Miami to now shift Wilson after he received a lump sump signing bonus when he signed? He’d be cheap for a team that may find themselves needing a passer.
That, too, is a long shot. But never say never. Instability can bring all kinds of chaos, which Miami is finding out first hand amid their early season struggles in 2025.
