The Miami Dolphins (8-4) and LA Chargers (6-6) are both in the midst of a battle for one of three wild card spots. Even though the Dolphins are still very much alive for the AFC East crown and potentially home-field throughout the playoffs, they'll have next week in game two against the Buffalo Bills to retake the lead.

However, this week's focus is on another playoff-level team. The Chargers have had an up and down season. Starting 4-2 through six games, are now 6-6. Highlighted by QB Justin Herbert.

Herbert is on a historic path with his third season almost up, potentially setting another passing mark this weekend.

However, this has also been a bit of an inconsistent year for Herbert as well. Not having his WR1 Keenan Allen for much of the year, as well as All-Pro OT Rashawn Slater hasn't helped either.

On the year, Herbert is completing over 65% again, but has had multiple games throwing into coverage. Struggling the most throwing 20 or less yards from the line of scrimmage.

Playing with a 77.3 passer rating on passes under 20 yards in the middle of the field.

Four of his seven interceptions come from throwing passes on or inside the hashmarks. In fact, Herbert is 2-5 in games where he turns the ball over. His two wins coming from the Denver Broncos and Atlanta Falcons.

Hoes this affect Miami? The Dolphins defense is an opportunistic one this season, creating turnovers in six games this season. Going 5-1 in those contests, with the one loss coming last week against San Francisco, who's pass rush swallowed QB Tua Tagovailoa alive.

This is a game that will come down to the turnover makers on the Miami Dolphins defense. Primarily defensive backs Jevon Holland, Xavien Howard and Justin Bethel. Who all combine for 17 pass breakups and four interceptions on the season so far.

Turnovers are not a consistent threat on this Dolphins defense but have the back seven (linebackers and secondary) to do what's necessary. If they can force Herbert into the middle and take away the deep ball, they will walk away with the AFC East still in realistic grasp.
