With Tua Tagovailoa on injured reserve after suffering another concussion during the Miami Dolphins' 31-10 loss last week to the Buffalo Bills, Miami will be turning to Skylar Thompson for the second time in three seasons.

While it might seem as though the drop off is going to be great – and there's no mistaking the hit the offense will take as far as Tagovailoa's deep ball and accuracy – there is a side of the Miami offense that could end up taking a step forward with Thompson under center.

WR Tyreek Hill addressed on Thursday how Thompson can help the offense over the next four games.

“He’s a little bit faster than Tua (Tagovailoa), so I’m a little bit excited about that. (laughter) Skylar (Thompson), he does a great job of extending plays. As you seen, man, when he came in (in 2022) when we played against Buffalo, he did a good job of stretching the ball down field and giving them a different look. He has some great qualities to himself. He’s fearless, he’s not afraid of anything and he’s a real competitor. I love that.”

Thompson does have a strong ability to extend plays with his legs.  Granted, that's not something that can be utilized as much at the pro level as in college.  However, it can help him evade protection and pick up some tough yards.  It could also catch a team with man coverage napping if they're not careful and leave the middle of the field open, something Mike McDaniel will likely work to his advantage.

Thompson also shouldn't be fazed by the pressure of taking over as the starter, as he's played in pressure spots before.  As Hill mentioned, Thompson started the Dolphins' playoff game in Buffalo two seasons ago.  While it wasn't a great performance by any means from Thompson (18/45 220 yards, a touchdown with 2 interceptions), it was enough to keep Miami in the game against a very, very good opponent, ultimately falling to Buffalo 34-31.

The task will be a challenge on Sunday in Seattle for the Dolphins' offense.  However, if Miami can get solid play from Thompson over the next month, the Dolphins have the chance to stay afloat in the AFC East until Tagovailoa is able to return.  That's all you can ask at this point.
