Minnesota Vikings set to get major boost for Thursday night vs. Chargers and Kevin O’Connell is primed for a huge game
It’s a huge win for the Vikings heading into a must-win game Thursday night.
The Minnesota Vikings have been dealing with a brutal rash of injuries over the course of the season. It started going into the year where they missed left tackle Christian Darrisaw and safety Harrison Smith for the first two games. After that, the likes of edge rusher Andrew Van Ginkel, center Ryan Kelly, and quarterback J.J. McCarthy have missed a multitude of games.
Despite their injuries, the Vikings are still in a decent spot with a 3-3 record. Quarterback Carson Wentz hasn’t been good, but he’s been good enough to keep the Vikings afloat, which is exactly what sort of expectations you have for that position.
Aaron Jones set to return Thursday night vs. Chargers
The Vikings are in a good spot going into Thursday night football, as they are going to get one of their important players back. Running back Aaron Jones is set to return against the Los Angeles Chargers on Thursday night.
This is a big addition to the Vikings’ offense. The running game has been a little inconsistent, with the majority of their issues coming from the lack of explosive runs.
Jordan Mason has acquitted himself very well as the guy in the backfield, but is averaging only 4.5 yards per carry and isn’t the most fluid player in space. His performance over the first six games show the biggest issue being said explosive runs, and the numbers back it up.
- EPA/rush: 26th in NFL
- Success rate: 6th in NFL
Getting Jones back should help with some of those explosive runs, which the Vikings have 18 runs of 10+ yards so far this season. He’s on the wrong side of 30, but there is still plenty of juice in his game. That should help the Vikings have their thunder and lightning duo.
With the Chargers being decimated on the interior of the offensive line, the Vikings should be able to feast in the run game on Thursday night.
