NFL insider provides clarity on how Minnesota Vikings are working on fixing the quarterback position after Carson Wentz news
It makes a lot of sense, but it takes two to tango.
The Minnesota Vikings continue to have quarterback issues. While they are getting starting quarterback J.J. McCarthy back in the fold, backup quarterback Carson Wentz was just placed on injured reserve after needing shoulder surgery to fix a torn labrum and partially broken socket.
With Wentz now out, rookie undrafted free agent Max Brosmer is set to move up to the backup quarterback spot, but will he keep that spot for very long? That remains to be seen, but the options at their disposal are relatively limited.
Adam Schefter believes Vikings will trade for a backup quarterback
With a limited amount of option at their disposal, the trade market ahead of Tuesday, November 4th’s deadline is going to get hot and heavy. ESPN’s Adam Schefter believes that the Vikings could end up trading for a backup quarterback.
“The Minnesota Vikings are gonna have to add a veteran quarterback,” said Schefter on his podcast Tuesday morning. “I don’t think it’s a high-profile move, but look, when they traded Sam Howell, before the season, they had Carson Wentz waiting in the wings. Carson Wentz has season-ending shoulder surgery, and the two quarterbacks on their roster are J.J. McCarthy and Max Brosmer, two young quarterbacks. The Vikings have to add a veteran quarterback at some point in time here. I think there’s going to be a flurry of activity after next week.
It shouldn’t be much of a surprise that the Vikings are going to be targeting a backup quarterback. They did the same back in 2023 when Kirk Cousins went down with a torn Achilles tendon. Where things get interesting is who they could end up targeting and how much it will cost them.
Josh Dobbs was a late-round pick swap in 2023, and it resulted in Passtronaut Mania, which took the entire country by storm. Dobbs likely isn’t available with him being behind Drake Maye for the New England Patriots.
Now, the aforementioned Cousins could end up being an option for the Vikings, but he would be expensive in both draft capital and on the salary cap. That’s a big factor in these discussions. If the Vikings do end up trading for a backup quarterback, it shouldn’t be a huge move.
For the time being, Brosmer is the backup and he’s given the Vikings every reason to be confident in him.
