Adam Thielen proved how much he wanted to be a Minnesota Vikings wide receiver again by adjusting his contract. Per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Thielen dropped his salary by $2 million and had $4 million in incentives removed.

When the Vikings were in the market to trade for a wide receiver, the salary cap situation was going to play a factor in who the Vikings chose to target. Thielen making this move is huge for the Vikings, and it’s not just for this season.

Adam Thielen takes hometown discount for Vikings

Currently, the Vikings are in a good spot from a salary cap perspective in 2025, but the 2026 salary cap situation is more difficult. Before the restructure, the Vikings were just $16,163,270 under the salary cap with the hopes they could roll over a significant amount of money to 2026.

With 45 players currently under contract for 2026, the Vikings are $53,707,248 per Over The Cap. Having that much money over the cap is tough, but little moves like this from Thielen are going to make a big difference.

With the pay cut, the Vikings will be nearly $19 million under the salary cap, and potentially more with the incentives coming off the board. That will be revealed in time, as we don’t often learn about what the incentives are until they happen.

It’s a big deal for Thielen to take a discount, but it makes sense. Panthers general manager Dan Morgan revealed how much Thielen wanted to return to the Vikings on a radio show in Charlotte.

“We have a young group of guys that we’re really excited about here, and it’s kind of hard. And I sat Adam Thielen down in my office, and he really wants to go there [Minnesota], and he’s pretty adamant that this is what I want. I didn’t really want to stand in his way. It was something that he was really convicted about. He wanted to go and finish his career there. Obviously, he’s from there. He has a house there, he has young kids. There’s a human side to it.”

It’s great to have Thielen back.
