One of the biggest surprises for the Minnesota Vikings this season has been inside linebacker Eric Wilson. When he was signed in the offseason, the thought was that he’d just be the backup to both Blake Cashman and Ivan Pace Jr. just like Kamu Grugier-Hill was last season. This year, he took a big step forward with Cashman dealing with a hamstring injury and Pace struggling.

Even though the Vikings were excited about having Wilson back in the building, nobody thought he would be this impactful player on the field like he has been as of late, including defensive coordinator Brian Flores.

“Quick answer, no. But I think any player who steps into the building, their role is what they make it. And I think he’s continued to improve,” said Flores about Wilson playing well. “He’s continued to take advantage of his opportunities.”

Eric Wilson is making a serious impact

It’s been really nice to see Wilson make this kind of impact for the Vikings, and it’s something that they needed, especially against the Detroit Lions’ rushing attack. Over the course of the last three weeks, Wilson has made a significant impact.

“He’s made plays. And when you do that, you earn you earn snaps, you earn the right to be on the field,” said Flores. “If you become one of the most consistent, dependable, productive players. Boom, you’re going to be out there. And so that’s my message to everybody who steps into the building. We don’t care about what means a guy got here. We’ve got several guys who were, you know, in that boat, Jalen Redmond, who work at it day after day after day. That just makes sense to me. It’ll always make sense to me.”

The off-ball linebacker position is such an important one for Flores’ defense, and he’s been maximizing what he gets from that group. Wilson has been used as an edge rusher, blitzer, and drops into coverage well. When you have that kind of success, it’s going to earn you a lot of snaps.

Wilson’s renaissance has been huge for the Vikings this season, and it continues to show that it’s an important position for the defense.
