Seemingly everyone had questions about why the Minnesota Vikings weren't giving many snaps to their first-round pick edge rusher Dallas Turner.
It was baffling to many. Was he not performing during practice? Is there something to be worried about in the long term? Nobody was quite sure what was going on. From my perspective, it seemed that Turner was behind Andrew Van Ginkel on the depth chart and they were asking both players to play the same role. With that in mind, it would make sense why Turner wasn't getting a lot of snaps, as Van Ginkel was playing at a very high level.
Brian Flores reveals why Dallas Turner played more vs. Colts
In the win over the Colts, Turner played 26 snaps, which was the most he had played since the season opener against the New York Giants where he played 35 on defense. Flores' answer gave credence to the above theory about why Turner wasn't getting a ton of snaps.
I know that's something that a lot of people have been talking about. I think you know, Gink (Van Ginkel) was a little bit not hurt, a minor thing that he was dealing with. So, you know, Dallas is the next guy in. He went in, you know, played well. Gink said he was ready to go back in, and we kept the same kind of grouping for the remainder of the game, and Dallas did a few good things as well. So again, that's a deep room. There's a lot of good players in there. And you know, by and large, we'll go to the hot hand."
Having Van Ginkel dealing with an injury, albeit a minor one, isn't great for the Vikings. However, it's not the end of the world with the emergence of Turner this past week. We will continue to monitor the situation with Van Ginkel throughout the week.
